5 mistakes you’re making with your content marketing (and how to fix them)

Are you tired of spending ages on your content marketing and posting consistently but hearing nothing but crickets?

I feel your pain. I know how frustrating it can be when you create content every day, and you don’t get the results you’d hoped for – especially when you know you’re bloody awesome at what you do.

Being visible and consistent in your marketing is a great way to raise your profile and bring in new clients. But if your content isn’t landing and generating enquiries, something needs to change.

It’s not about being louder or posting more. It’s about saying the right things in the right way so the right people pay attention and take action.

Here are 5 common mistakes I often find my clients are making…and more importantly, how to fix them:

1.       You’re trying to appeal to everyone in your content

When you try to appeal to everyone, you end up appealing to no one. So spend some time really understanding who your ideal clients is. Picture one specific person (it could be a past client or a dream client) and jot down what challenges they’re facing, what their goals are, and what’s holding them back. Then write directly to that person. I go into more detail on this in my free email course.

2.       Your content sounds “nice” but it’s not compelling

There’s so much noise, particularly on social media. It’s hard to stand out. People have short attention spans and are being overwhelmed with content. That’s why using hooks on social media to grab the reader’s attention is key. Get inside your ideal client’s mind and think about what would make them stop scrolling.

3.       You’re not clear on what you want your content to do

Your content should always have a purpose, so it’s important to ask yourself before you publish anything, ‘why am I posting this and what’s the goal?’ It could be to educate, to inspire, to entertain or sell, but be sure to mix it up (don’t constantly sell – you need a good mix).

4.       Your marketing channels are working in silos rather than being aligned

All of your marketing channels should be aligned with the same tone of voice, the same messaging and the same offers and pricing. Your website, emails, blog and social media should all join up and work together to bring in more of your ideal clients. So, if you write a blog, repurpose it for social media. If you create a new offer, promote it in your email. Think of them as team members all working to the same objective.

5.       You’re posting on the fly and not thinking about how it ties into your business

Having 3-5 content pillars (stuff you talk about consistently) helps builds authority in your industry and ultimately makes it easier to create good content – trust me on this. When you stick to your pillars, your content is more focused and more targeted to your audience. Don’t forget to reuse and repurpose old content too.

How to feel more confident in your marketing

You might have tried lots of different ways to grow your business before, but being specific about who you’re talking to and the action you want them to take is truly the best way to get more of your ideal clients coming to you.

It’s not about being louder or posting more. It’s about saying the right things in the right way so the right people pay attention…and take action.

If this is something you’ve been struggling with, I cover all of this in my free, 5-day email course.

Each day you’ll get an email with a short task to complete. By the end of the five days, you’ll feel more confident about creating content for your business without constantly second-guessing yourself.
