The different hats of a content writer and business owner

As a freelance writer and business owner, I wear a lot of different hats.

I’m still learning how to run my business effectively, but there are a number of skills I’ve had to learn quickly.

The accountant’s hat

This is one of the most important hats I wear as a business owner. If I don’t have this hat in my wardrobe, I won’t earn any money. I’ve had to quickly get my head around invoicing and tax returns to stay on top of my finances.

The marketer’s hat

Even when I’m busy, I have to remember to keep my marketing hat on to continue to promote my business and services. This hat also works hand-in-hand (or head-in-head) with my accountant’s hat, because I know when to up my marketing game in order to bring in more income.

The HR manager’s hat

Thankfully I only have to manage one person (me) and I’m pretty easy to deal with. But even as a business owner, it’s important to take a break every now and then. Wearing my HR manager’s hat means I can work my work around other priorities like my daughter’s sports day or school holidays.

Then when I create content, I wear a number of different hats.

🗿 The sculpting hat – helping me to chisel away at the copy to ensure it has the perfect structure and looks good from every angle.

🕵🏻‍♀️ The detective hat – for when I need to use my investigative skills to research what needs to be said, find the right angle, and the best way to say it.

👩🏻‍💼 A lawyer’s hat – means I speak on behalf of the company or client and use my expertise to ensure the words come across in the best light, while protecting the company/client’s reputation.

🤡 A clown hat - to add a touch of humour here and a cheeky pun there to engage the reader.

💇🏻‍♀️ The hairdresser’s hat – helps me trim all those straggly and unnecessary words to make sure the copy is neat and tidy.

👩🏻‍🍳 A chef’s hat – allows me to experiment with a sprinkle of adjectives here and a pinch of alliteration there to ensure I serve up a tasty piece of copy.

💎 The jeweller’s hat – helps me dig deep to find those dazzling gems of content and bring out the sparkle in the final piece.

👮🏻 A police officer’s hat - ensures everything is as it should be by giving my content a thorough search to check for any pesky typos or grammatical mistakes that often creep into the first draft when I’m trying to get all my thoughts down on page.

🦹🏻‍♀️ A thief’s hat – occasionally I use this hat to pinch a fab idea or two I see during my research. And then I make them my own to ensure the content is relevant for the audience I’m speaking to.

What hats do you wear in your business? I'd love to know.
