When you’re building your business from the ground up, you wear a lot of different hats. There’s the CEO hat, the finance director hat, and of course, the marketing manager hat.
With so many responsibilities, one area that often feels overwhelming, and often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list, is content marketing.
You’ve probably heard the term tossed around in workshops, webinars or social media groups – hell, I even mention it in some of my social posts. But what exactly is content marketing and, more importantly, why should you care?
What is content marketing?
Content marketing is all about building real connections through valuable, consistent content. Think blog posts, social media updates and emails.
Instead of just promoting your products or services, it's about sharing helpful insights, stories and resources that speak directly to the needs of your audience.
Instead of saying, “Buy my product!” you’re saying, “Here’s something useful. Oh, and by the way, I can help with more of this.”
As a woman running your own business, it means showing up with content that supports your clients or customers – whether you're helping them solve challenges in their work or offering something meaningful in their personal lives.
Content marketing is a smart, intentional way to grow your brand, earn trust and ultimately drive sales in a way that feels authentic and aligned with your values.
Why is content marketing important?
Marketing is pretty much impossible without good content. And that content should be integrated into your marketing, not treated separately.
People don’t just buy what you sell. They buy why you sell it, how it makes them feel, and the connection they feel to you.
Remember the phrase: people buy from people? It’s true. And that’s where good content comes in.
Blog posts help you share your story, your expertise and your unique voice
Social media lets you engage with your audience and show personality (people love doing business with real humans)
Emails keep your audience warm and interested
Content marketing allows you to showcase your expertise, educate your audience and inspire action, without the pressure of a hard sell.
As a female business owner, you already have the heart, the story and the value. Content marketing simply amplifies that to the people who are looking for exactly what you offer.
And when done right, it can become your best salesperson – working hard for you, even when you’re asleep.
Common myths about content marketing (and why they're wrong)
I hear these a lot as a content marketing specialist...
“I’m not a writer”
You don’t have to be! Speak your truth and be authentic, because done is better than perfect.
“I don’t have time”
You don’t need to post every day. One thoughtful blog post or newsletter a month can make a huge impact.
“No one reads blogs anymore”
Maybe not word-for-word, but Google does. And so do the people who need your help. A good blog builds visibility and trust.
Where to start with content marketing
When your brand starts growing, the thought of writing all the content yourself isn’t just overwhelming, it’s not always effective. Content marketing isn’t about being loud. It’s about being consistent, genuine and strategic.
Here are my three top tips:
Get clear on who you’re talking to
Your ideal client should feel like you’re speaking directly to them.
Choose one platform to focus on
Don’t try to do it all. Master one, then expand.
Plan ahead
Batch your content and repurpose it. The aim is to have a plan so all your content is aligned and you’re making the most out of one piece of content or campaign.
